Ashland CarShare Presents……Movie Night at the Bellview Grange

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, October 1st and plan to spend an evening at the movies.  ACS will be sponsoring two free films which support our cause.  “The Lorax”, the Dr. Seuss classic, will begin at 6:30pm with “Who Killed the Electric Car?” following at 7:15pm.  We are very excited to be bringing the community together for an evening of fun, education, and lively discussion.

Spread the word, bring your families, and help us raise awareness (and funds!) for alternative transportation in Ashland.

Once I figure out how to import the flyer, it’ll be on here!

Ashland CarShare in the News

ACS has gotten a bit of press this summer.  Seems that lowering our dependence upon fossil fuels is hitting the mainstream media.  Imagine that!

Follow these links from the Daily Tidings and  Mail Tribune to read up.  Unfortunately, neither article mentions the website and neither does a great job accurately explaining the details involved in carsharing, but a little exposure has got to be a good thing.

I’m working on the deatils for our Fall Fundraisers.  So far, we’re planning on a Sunday Pancake Breakfast at Pilaf as well as a movie night.  Two movies have been suggested:  Who Killed the Electric Car? and The End of Suburbia.  Any thoughts?  E mail me (ashlandcarshare@gmail.com) if you have an opinion that would be helpful.

I’m putting the finishing touches on our MRG grant application and looking for a proof reader available this weekend.  Any takers?

We meet next Wednesday…come join us!

Web Site Launched!

Well, we’ve finally made it into the web-world. Thanks to the hard work of our Web Designer and Web Master, Alejandro, we have finally launched our site.

Stay tuned for regular updates. I’m hopeful that we will be able to keep our supporters informed and our potential members hanging by the edges of their seats for that glorious day when we register our first members and launch our first vehicle.

Check back with us often, and be sure to come on by the Ashland Library the first Wednesday of each month for our regular meeting. We meet at 5:30pm in the Guanajuato Room.

Disappointing News

Rats.

It’s looking like the Rogue Valley MPO (municipal planning organization) will not be awarding ACS with CMAQ funding this year. I just returned from the Advisory Committee meeting at the Council of Governments, and I’m sad to report that in the lengthy, one hour discussion the committee had on the CMAQ grant candidates, ACS didn’t even make it to the table.

Looks like CMAQ air quality funds for Jackson County will go to pay for road paving projects after all. There were 7 potential projects applying for funding. Two were RVTD expansion projects (it wouldn’t have been quite so sad if either of these had won, extended bus service, I can deal with), one was a city of Medford vehicle purchase, one was a Jackson County vehicle purchase, two were road construction projects (one in Ashland and one in Jacksonville), and finally, Ashland CarShare. we scored 5th out of 7. The entire discussion held by committee members centered around the importance of “backfunding” projects that had already been partially funded and were projected to go well over budget.

Did you know that it costs over a million dollars to pave 700 feet of roadway? I was astounded. And discouraged.

I learned a lot, though. Just attending the meeting allowed me to see how our county operates and helps me to understand the decision making process. I am hopeful that we will be poised and ready to submit an application in the next funding cycle (in 18 months or so) that will catch the attention of the committee members and help facilitate an understanding of the extreme importance of carsharing in the Rogue Valley

CMAQ Air Quality Grant

Well, we’ve just finished writing our first grant for ACS.  I’ve never written a grant before, so it was quite an experience.  I got a call a few weeks ago from Paige Townsend over at RVTD letting me know that some federal funding had become available.  Thankfully, I had heard several people at NAICS earlier in the month talking about federal CMAQ (Congestion Mitigation Air Quality) funds and how essential they were for many carshare start ups.  I was able to talk to Karen at Boulder CarShare and Tanya at Philly CarShare about their experience with CMAQ grants and got some great tips on how to approach the application.

Carsharing is a great candidate for these funds because it’s very concept is based on reducing vehicle miles traveled (gov’t speak for driving less) thereby improving air quality.  I’ve been warned that CMAQ funding often goes to diesel retrofit projects (cleaner emissions for big-rigs) and road paving projects (less dust=improved air quality) but a large part of the application focuses on innovative technology and sustained air quality over the long term.  Carsharing certainly has those two aspects covered.  Carsharing allows people to make long-term lifestyle changes that can be passed on, improving air quality and land use for generations.

Paige was amazing and really held my hand throughout the whole process.  She’s a real advocate for carsharing.  I’m hopeful that this will be the real beginning of ACS.  The grant could award us up to $30,000 over 18 months, which would be enough to purchase a new Prius, reservation software, and key fob technology.  Just what we need to launch our first vehicle by the end of this year!

Keep your fingers crossed.  We should know in a few weeks.

North American Independent CarSharing Conference

I’ve just returned from the NAICS conference in Philadelphia, PA. What an experience. It was hosted by the folks at PhillyCarShare. It will take me quite a while to digest everything that I learned while rubbing elbows with some amazing CarSharing pioneers. Over 20 independent carshares were represented, from the US, Canada, and even Australia! A gentleman from GoGet carshare came all the way from Sydney to present some innovative marketing ideas and to share what’s new down under.

The biggest gift I came away with by far was the inspiration to keep on keepin’ on. I have moments when I fear that ACS will never become a real carshare. It was inspirational to hear the stories from founding members of established carshares in cities like San Francisco, Philly, Chicago, Boulder, and Madison. They shared what their early days were like and encouraged all of us newbies to keep up the great work. It’s hard to imagine that Philly CarShare ever struggled. With 20% of the adult population of the city of Philadelphia currently participating in carshare, it’s obvious they’re doing something right!

These founding mothers and fathers are the perfect examples of empowered young people with a desire to make a difference. They pioneered the carsharing industry in North America at a time when technology, public policy, and the general population were unable to support their visions. Now, after 10 or more years of their collective blood, sweat, and tears, people like us are able to benefit enormously from their difficult years of laying the ground work and setting the stage for an association of independent carsharing oraganizations.

As a group, we talked at great length about the importance of working together. Plans are already in the works for us to share group insurance as well as reciprocal memberships for members who travel. Having the support of NAICS will certainly be a huge benefit for us as we get ACS off the ground.

I am, at times, overwhelmed by a sense of immense responsibility to bring large doses of hope and inspiration for the direction our world is headed. In the midst of ground breaking social change and the rapid diminishing of formerly abundant natural resources, these leaders of the carsharing movement prove that our commitment to positive, progressive environmental causes will indeed bring about the shift in our collective consciousness as a society of human beings unwisely dependent upon personal car ownership.

Listening to the passion and dedication that every single person in attendance these past two days displayed, I am truly humbled to have been included. It was well worth the jet lag and the hassle of traveling across the country at the last minute. And it wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity extended by Philly CarShare. Thanks guys!
